Oxygen Facts

By mass, oxygen is the third most abundant element in the universe.

Oxygen accounts for over half of the Earth's crust.

The majority of the mass of almost all living organisms is oxygen.

Its name is taken from the Greek words oxys meaning ‘acid’ and genes, 'forming.

Diatomic oxygen (O2) gas makes up almost 21 percent of the Earth’s atmosphere.

On average, the human body is 65 percent oxygen by mass.
